What is AviWIND?

AviWIND is a real-time aviation wind monitoring web application serving multiple aviation locations (heliports, airports, airfields etc). Built for pilots, helicopter crews, and aviation professionals who need instant, accurate wind data in the field — accessible from any device, no app store required.

It is a Greek Helicopters and AviTracer project.

Monitoring Stations

From the AviWIND home page at aviwind.com, tap any location button to open its dedicated wind gauge.

Pro Tip

You can install individual location pages directly to your home screen — not just the main hub. This is useful for pilots who regularly operate at one aerodrome.

Reading the Display

A full visual reference for every element on the wind compass display. Tap the image to view it full screen.

The legend is also accessible from every location page — tap the ⓘ icon in the top right corner of any location to open it directly.

Crosswind Chart

The Crosswind Component Chart gives you an instant breakdown of headwind and crosswind components based on the live wind data at that location.

To access it, tap either runway number on the runway overlay in the compass display. The chart will open showing the current crosswind and headwind/tailwind values for that runway heading.

Status Pills

Below the wind speed readout, coloured condition pills appear automatically when specific weather conditions are detected by the station sensors. They are absent when conditions are normal.

FOG / MIST
RAIN
STRIKE
Indicator Colour Meaning
FOG / MIST ■ Red Station is currently detecting low-visibility conditions — fog or mist. Exercise caution for VFR operations.
RAIN ■ Blue Active precipitation detected at the station. Conditions may affect visibility and surface grip.
STRIKE ■ Red Lightning strikes detected within 20 NM in the last 30 minutes. Indicates active thunderstorm activity in the vicinity — exercise extreme caution.
(no pill shown) — None No adverse weather conditions currently detected. Normal visibility and dry conditions.

Weather Data

Each location provides additional weather station data beyond wind — including temperature, humidity, pressure trends, and more.

To access it, tap the QNH gauge on the bottom right of the display. This opens a detailed weather data panel with all available readings from that station.

Install as App

AviWIND is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that can be added to your home screen on any device for instant one-tap access, full-screen display, and offline-capable loading — exactly like a native app.

Device Browser Required How to Install

iPad Safari Tap Share icon → Add to Home Screen → Add
Android Chrome (recommended) Tap ⋮ menu → Add to Home Screen or Install App
Android Other browsers Look for Install or Add to Home Screen in the browser menu

iPhone — Important

On iPhone, installation only works from Safari. If you open AviWIND from Chrome, Instagram, or any other in-app browser on iOS, you must first tap the browser menu and choose Open in Safari, then follow the install steps.

Step-by-Step: iPhone (Safari)

1
Open aviwind.com in Safari

Make sure you are using Safari, not Chrome or any other browser. If you're unsure, look for the compass icon in your app dock — that's Safari.

2
Tap the Share icon

The Share button is the square with an upward arrow, located in the centre of the bottom toolbar in Safari.

3
Select "Add to Home Screen"

Scroll down in the share sheet until you see Add to Home Screen. Tap it.

4
Confirm and tap Add

A preview shows the AviWIND icon and name. Tap Add in the top right. The app icon now appears on your home screen.

Installing Individual Locations

You can repeat these steps while viewing any individual location page to install that specific location directly.
